ABout the Creator

Hello!

Welcome to the creative project: Considering the Ethical Implications of Tourism in Hawai'i.

My name is Carla Rendon and I am a Justice Studies Major, and Global Studies Minor at Arizona State University.

I was originally born in La Union, Philippines, but I moved to Arizona in 2006. Growing up, no one really knew what the Philippines was. I would look up pictures on the internet to show people where I lived, but I felt it never gave an accurate account of how I viewed the Philippines.

The images of beaches and tropical fruit were beautiful, but it left out a lot of rich history and culture that I felt was necessary to really understand and appreciate a place.

Sparked by this, I wanted to explore what was necessary to learn about a place in order to give it the respect it deserves. I chose to focus on Hawai'i in this exploration because it is often referred to as paradise on Earth. Through this project, I wanted to uncover the full picture of Hawai'i and explore how tourism specifically can impact the development and perceptions of a location.

Traveling is easy, Learning is hard

Before visiting a new place, we have a responsibility of learning about its history and culture as a form of respect.
